Operating systems & compatibility - Windows

As our programs are multimedia programs, they have been optimised to work with the commercially available consumer versions of Windows and MacOS at the time of release. As these change over time, we try to test and update our programs as required. There are currently two series of our programs.

Original series
  • PA1-Phonics Alive! v1.x
  • PA2-The Sound Blender v1.x

  • When these two programs were written, they were developed and tested for Windows 3.11 and Windows 95. As such there were two executable programs on each CD, a 16-bit program for Windows 3.11 and a 32-bit program for Windows 95.

Windows NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP were not available at the time these programs were written. Recent internal testing indicates that they appear to run acceptably, but as they have not had the extensive testing of the original target platforms, we cannot advertise compliance. Note that you must run the 16-bit version of the program on these platforms.

    Original series program executables
    Program Windows 3.11 Windows 95/98/ME Windows NT4/2000/XP
    Phonics Alive! v1.1 phonics.exe phonic95.exe phonics.exe
    The Sound Blender! v1.2a blender.exe blend_95.exe blender.exe

    Second series
  • PA1-Phonics Alive! v3.x
  • PA3-The Speller
  • PA4-Grammar
  • PA6-Typing

  • The second series of programs has been primarily developed and tested under Windows 95 and Windows 98. The currently available versions of this second series of programs have been tested under Windows ME, Windows NT4 (SP6a), Windows 2000 and Windows XP and have been found to be compliant.

Operating systems & compatibility - Other

    Novell 4.0
Whilst we do not provide technical support for Novell 4.0, it has been used by many schools as a server to clients running Windows. Recent (but limited) internal testing has not discovered any issues.

    Linux
There are no Linux versions of our programs as there is no Linux engine available at this time.
Linux running as a server using either Samba or atalkd has proven problematic to define, due mostly to issues with multiple-user file locking, but we are investigating these issues and when we have worked it out, we will post the answers here.

    MacOS X
Unfortunately at this time,we are unable to provide a MacOS X native version of our programs. Recent testing with MacOS X (10.1.2) and prior to that developer preview releases indicates that there are no significant issues with our software when running in the "Classic" environment.
Rest assured that we have every intention of supporting MacOS X, as we choose it as our primary development environment. We will also continue to upgrade and update our entire series of software, as we have done since the initial release, with functionality enhancements and operating system support. Please refer to the following table which describes various operating systems and their potential uses.
